What is a QR Code?

A QR Code is a two-dimensional bar code.

It is more functional than the bar code we are familiar with and it was developed by the Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. QR  stands for “Quick Response” because its content is decoded at high speed.

Though new to us, they have been used in Japan for a decade and in Europe for the last several years. Now they are being adopted here in the US.

Folks, we are way behind the rest of the world when it comes to mobile stuff but were learning fast.

Look at the results I got just now for a Google search on ‘local business qr codes’.

  • PAST YEAR:  1,920,000 results
  • PAST MONTH:  630,000 results  This means ONE THIRD of the results for the past year have just appeared in the last month!
  • PAST WEEK:  About 231,000 results This means ONE THIRD of the results for the past month have just appeared in the last week!
  • And, 47,300 results have just appeared in the last 24 hours and when I finish this article there will be one more!

QR Codes are showing up everywhere:

  • on merchandise
  • price labels
  • business cards
  • newspaper  and magazine ads
  • storefront windows
  • Web sites and more

They are delivering immediate information and marking another advance in the world of the Mobile Web.

Anyone with a Smart phone and a free QR Code reader application can scan these black and white (actually they can be any color!) codes using the phone’s camera.

The code then delivers the information it contains to the user. This can be

  • a Web site
  • a video
  • a coupon
  • special promotion
  • sweepstakes
  • surveys

or whatever else the code creator wants.

  • Real estate agents
  • auto dealers
  • property managers
  • nonprofits

are among the early adopters of QR codes.

Businesses often begin using QR codes by putting them on business cards. The code contains the contact information and the Web site for the company.

No matter how or  where they are used, QR codes are the NEW way to interact with your customers! In today’s world it’s not about advertising, it’s about getting them involved!
