On Monday, October 4, 2010 Google released an update on their progress on Google TV.
I mentioned Google TV in a previous e-mail and post. For those of you who did not read that e-mail or post, Google TV is a new way to think about TV. It’s a platform Google has created that combines TV and the web into a single seamless experience.
The goal of Google TV is to give your living room access to not only TV programming but the entire Internet so you can easily navigate to websites, watch your favorite web videos, play games, view photos, chat with your friends and watch TV all in the comfort of your living room on your big screen TV.
Now remember, Google’s business is selling advertising! So this great service does come with a condition! Google has been overwhelmed by interested partners on how they can use the Google TV platform to personalize, monetize and distribute their content in new ways. Most of these partner sites already work with Google and many are choosing to further enhance their web content for viewing on television.
Here are just a few of these content partners:
- Turner Broadcasting which includes
- TBS
- TNT
- CNN
- Cartoon Network
- Adult Swim
- NBC Universal with CNBC real-time, an application that allows you to track your favorite stocks and access news feeds while enjoying the best financial news directly on your TV screen.
- HBO will provide access to hundreds of hours of programming
- NBA has built NBA Game Time, an application that lets you follow game scores in real time and catch up on the latest highlights from your favorite team in HD.
- Amazon video on demand offers access to movie and TV titles on-demand directly on your television.
- Netflix will offer the ability to instantly watch unlimited movies and TV shows, anytime, streaming directly to your TV
- Google has also been working with
- news sites like The New York Times and USA Today
- music sites like VEVO, Pandora and Napster
- information networks like Twitter
- online networks like blip.tv
And, with YouTube (Which Google owns), you can watch your favorite viral videos and personalized channels on your big screen!
This is just the beginning. Over the next few weeks more sites will be announcing enhanced web content for your television.
